No matter how reputable a brand or how strong its security is, every company is vulnerable to the damage caused by fake ads. In fact, a business with a healthy reputation is a prime target for scammers who will falsely post advertisements to lure in their victims.

While it is ultimately up to the consumer to do the work of validating advertisements and job postings, it’s a challenging task—and businesses would do well to mitigate the fallout from these scams if they want to preserve their reputation. In addition to reputation, fake ads have a powerfully negative impact on customer trust and revenue. This represents a significant problem.

Thankfully, there are ways for brands to protect themselves from falling victim to scammers—and to recover from a scam when it happens. This blog will explore common vulnerabilities, as well as seven effective strategies and tools that businesses use every day to prevent the misrepresentation of their brand.

Fake Ads and Their Impact on Businesses

Before implementing solutions, it’s essential for businesses to fully grasp the problem and impact of fake ads. These fraudulent advertisements are created by scammers to mimic the appearance and messaging of legitimate brands. They’re designed to lure unsuspecting customers or hopeful hires into engaging with or purchasing from a fraudulent source, often leading to financial loss and a tarnished brand image.

For example, a scammer might pose as a popular customer experience (CX) evaluation agency looking for new secret shoppers. People seeking jobs in this industry might click on the advertisement, follow the instructions, and find that instead of making money at a new job, they’ve lost all their savings. Not knowing it was a scam, they blame the secret shopper agency and start bashing them online—ruining their reputation and making others question their integrity. Moreover, businesses may even face legal liabilities if they are perceived as negligent in preventing misuse of their brand assets.

Needless to say, in any outcome, this is bad for business.

Unfortunately, because scammers are always working to get around preventative measures, businesses are only ever able to play catch-up with them. As soon as one verification strategy is in place, scammers find a new way to circumvent it. While this means that no company is ever completely secure from the impact of fake ads, it does mean that they have to be constantly vigilant.

Identifying Vulnerable Points for Fake Ads

The first step in countering fake ads is to understand where vulnerabilities lie. Identifying these points helps in developing targeted strategies that will safeguard brand assets and ensure that only genuine advertisements represent the company. To that end, here are the three main areas to watch for:

  • Ad Placement Channels

Scammers often exploit the very platforms that businesses use to advertise. Therefore, social media networks, search engines, and third-party websites are typical places to find fake ads and postings. These channels offer broad reach and often have less stringent verification processes compared to official company sites. As a result, unauthorized content can proliferate, making it challenging for businesses to monitor every digital corner where their brand might appear.

  • Internal Vulnerabilities

Sometimes the issue begins within a company’s own digital ecosystem. Outdated or loosely-enforced brand guidelines create gaps that scammers exploit. If a business doesn’t regularly update its digital assets, fraudsters can easily replicate these to create convincing facsimiles. Additionally, without a robust digital asset management system, unauthorized use of brand assets may go undetected, making it harder to take swift corrective action.

  • Traditional Scammer Tactics

Scammers use a variety of deceptive techniques to mislead consumers, but the goal is always the same: impersonation. For example, consider fake social media profiles or websites that look and feel like the legitimate brand. Alternatively, spoofing, or using similar domain names or slight variations in URLs, can lead consumers into believing they’re interacting with the official site. Often, they’ll incorporate attractive offers or promises to appear extra enticing. Of course, there are also more technical ways to scam people, but preventative tasks in this field typically belong to the experts in the IT department.

By understanding these vulnerable points, businesses can develop a more comprehensive approach to protect their brand.

7 Strategies for Preventing Fake Ads

With all these vulnerabilities and inevitabilities considered, there are still plenty of ways for businesses to prevent fake ads from ruining their brand reputation. Here are seven of the top strategies employed today.

1 – Strengthen Digital Brand Identity

Although it may seem simple, maintaining strong branding guidelines is an effective first line of defense against scammers and fake ads. Specifically, updating and enforcing comprehensive brand guidelines makes a company’s appearance consistent and professional… which can be hard for common scammers to mimic, and easier for everyday consumers to detect. Additionally, registered trademarks, though easily imitable, provide legal backing and support. Lastly, securing digital assets through the latest intellectual property best practices is essential.

2 – Leverage Monitoring and Detection Tools

Once the assets themselves are secure, the next step is to be proactive about detecting fake ads. Utilize automated brand monitoring software and AI-powered tools to detect unauthorized ads in common areas. Furthermore, employ social media “listening” tools to track mentions and fraudulent use of brand assets. Pay close attention to reports of unexpected interactions, as these may point to brand exploitation.

3 – Collaborate with Advertising Platforms

Advertising platforms are similarly disinclined to allow rampant fraudulent behavior, as it reflects poorly on their brand as well. Therefore, establishing relationships with major ad networks like Google and Facebook allows businesses to more quickly report and remove fake ads as they occur. These platforms often also have their own reporting mechanisms and account verification processes, which help their clients prevent scams and boost trust in users.

4 – Use Legal and Regulatory Measures Against Fake Ads

Needless to say, posting fake ads is typically illegal as well as morally wrong—so working with legal counsel is a good step for businesses looking to understand their rights. This counsel is better able to guide business owners and executives to take the steps necessary to remove these posts, as well as mitigate any damage caused. They may even send cease and desist letters and recommend pursuing legal action, depending on the circumstances.

5 – Educate Customers and Report Fake Ads Promptly

One story goes that a park ranger for Yosemite National Park was asked about the efficacy of supposedly bear-proof food storage boxes. His response? “There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists.” Similarly, even the best preventative measures can’t keep customers from falling for fake ads. Thus, it’s best practice for businesses to do their part to educate the public about any fraudulent activity occurring in their name. They should also encourage people to report these postings to the company itself in a timely manner, as this can help remedy the situation more quickly.

6 – Develop Internal Processes and Crisis Management Protocols

When the inevitable occurs, it’s good to have a plan in place. To this end, a keen strategy is to develop internal processes and crisis management protocols to tackle fake ads when they pop up. This way, the business has a consistent, predetermined response ready to roll whenever it’s needed. Equally important is training staff to actively participate in monitoring, detecting, and addressing fraudulent ads. They should be equipped to recognize, report, and take action promptly.  The less time businesses spend on figuring out what to do, the sooner the posts come down.

7 – Partner with an Agency for Online Reputation Management

Obviously, dealing with fake ads can be a big undertaking. Therefore, one of the best strategies to handle this task is to hire an online reputation management agency—like IntelliShop.

An agency provides expert knowledge in the most up-to-date spam prevention techniques. Additionally, they monitor their clients’ presence online, so that every mention only shows them in the best possible light. They can even monitor and respond to reviews and comments on popular platforms, keeping the business’s reputation active and positive. Ultimately, partnering with an agency saves businesses time, effort, and resources by outsourcing this critical task to trained professionals.

A Real-World Example of Fake Ads and Responses

As stated, scammers with fake ads can come for any well-reputed business. Here’s an example of a scam intended to imitate IntelliShop’s own secret shopper program through fraudulent email marketing.

Fake Ads - Example Email

The Scam Email

Here’s what the scammer emailed to potential victims:

Congratulations, [user name]! We are pleased to inform you that your application for the Mystery Research Shopper role has been successful!

The message went on to describe the company’s values, as well as the job’s benefits, compensation, and expectations. It then prompted the reader to reply with their “registration information for verification.” Instead, the scammer was simply collecting information with which to steal the reader’s identity.

Our Response

Besides putting our own internal teams in action to tackle the behind-the-scenes work of taking down this scammer, we implemented our own protocols for public awareness soon after with this social media post:

SCAM ALERT, Shoppers Beware:

Scammers are emailing shoppers from FAKE IntelliShop email addresses claiming to have lucrative mystery shops that need to be completed.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • Double check that emails are coming from an @intelli-shop.com email address. This is our only email domain, and you WILL NOT receive offers like this from non-IntelliShop emails.
  • Flag these emails as spam.
  • Forward the message to shoppersupport@intelli-shop.com.

The Strategy

As shown, this public education method directed readers to several easy, concrete steps that would not only help us identify and deal with the scammer directly but also keep them from continuing to receive fake ads from this address. This strategy was effective in the following ways:

  • Mitigating damage done and working toward resolution
  • Preventing future scams through education
  • Demonstrating proactive prevention methods and building public trust in our company

We do the same—and so much more—for our clients through our online reputation management solution.
